HelpStack as a Crisp alternative: an unusually close call

Crisp is the competitor we overlap with most. Both are EU-hosted, both keep a human in the loop, both translate. Here is where we actually differ, and where Crisp is the better pick.

Most of our comparison pages have a clear argument. This one does not, and pretending otherwise would waste your time. Crisp is a good product built by a French team, hosted in the EU, with agent-assist AI and translation of its own, and it covers more channels than we do. If you are evaluating both, the decision comes down to three narrow things: how many people need seats, what you pay at your team size, and whether you need live store order data inside conversations.

Who this is for#

You run support for a small business or online store and you are either shopping for your first shared inbox or reconsidering Crisp because your team outgrew a seat tier. If you came here expecting us to explain why Crisp is bad, we are going to disappoint you.

Crisp vs. HelpStack, an honest comparison#

Crisp is a mature, well-designed platform. It is EU-based in Nantes with messaging data stored in the Netherlands and plugin data in Germany, so the GDPR posture is as good as ours. MagicReply gives agents AI-drafted answers that a human sends, which is the same human-in-the-loop model we build around. It handles multilingual conversations. And its channel list is longer than ours: alongside email, chat, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp it covers Telegram, SMS, X, Line, Viber and phone.

HelpStack overlaps heavily with that. Where we differ is the seat model, the price at small team sizes, and how deep we go into ecommerce order data.

Where we actually differ#

Seats. This is the real one. Crisp prices by workspace but caps how many people can be in it: two on free, four on Mini, ten on Essentials. HelpStack does not cap seats on any plan, including the free one. If you have six people who each answer a handful of messages, that is a $95 Essentials plan on Crisp and €29 on HelpStack.

Price at small team sizes. Crisp's entry paid plan is $45 for four seats. Ours is €29 for as many people as you like. At larger volumes and team sizes the two converge and Crisp's flat workspace pricing becomes very competitive, so this advantage is real but narrow.

Store order data. If you run Shopify or WooCommerce, our AI can look up a customer's actual orders, tracking and account details mid-conversation and answer "where is my order" without an agent switching tabs. We ship five Shopify tools and five WooCommerce ones plus a WordPress plugin. Crisp integrates with both, but this is the area where we have gone deepest.

Where Crisp is the better fit#

  • You need Telegram, SMS, X, Line, Viber or phone support, which we do not offer
  • Your team is small enough to fit a seat tier and you want the broadest channel coverage for the money
  • You want a longer track record and a larger integration ecosystem
  • You are already on Crisp and working well, in which case switching buys you very little

We would rather you stayed on Crisp than moved to the wrong tool. If the only thing pushing you off is a seat cap, that is a real reason. If it is not, Crisp is a fine place to be.

Making the switch#

Connect Instagram, Messenger and Facebook by OAuth, email by standard connection, and the chat widget with a script tag. Most teams are live in under an hour. Invite everyone, since seats cost nothing, then turn on AI reply suggestions and auto-translation. Run both side by side for a week; the free plan makes that cost nothing.

Frequently asked questions

Is HelpStack cheaper than Crisp?
At small team sizes, usually. HelpStack Starter is €29/month with unlimited agents; Crisp Mini is $45/month and caps you at four seats, with Essentials at $95 for ten. The saving comes from the seat model rather than the headline price, so it depends on how many people need access. At larger volumes Crisp’s flat workspace pricing is competitive and the gap narrows.
Is Crisp GDPR-compliant and EU-hosted like HelpStack?
Yes. Crisp is a French company based in Nantes, with messaging data stored in the Netherlands and plugin data in Germany, and it operates under CNIL supervision. EU data residency is not a differentiator between these two products, and we are not going to claim it is.
Does Crisp have AI replies like HelpStack?
Yes. Crisp’s MagicReply drafts answers for agents based on previous conversations, and a human sends them. That is the same human-in-the-loop approach HelpStack takes. The AI models and how they are billed differ, but the philosophy is the same.
What does Crisp support that HelpStack does not?
Channels. Crisp covers Telegram, SMS, X, Line, Viber and phone in addition to the email, chat, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp we both handle. If any of those are load-bearing for your support, Crisp is the better choice.
Why would I switch from Crisp to HelpStack?
Realistically, two reasons. You have more people who need access than your Crisp seat tier allows and moving up the tiers is expensive, or you run a Shopify or WooCommerce store and want the AI answering order and tracking questions from live store data. If neither applies, staying on Crisp is a reasonable decision.
